Pirate Mural

“Ahoy there, me mateys. You’re looking at everyone else on your walls, but what about me, your pirate mural? I also hang on the wall and watch over you. Unlike your comforter, your pillows, your printed rug, or your unframed art print, my job is to tell the true story of the pirates of old so that you don’t forget what bad people they were.

Today’s pirates, like you and your folks, are good people who just like to dress up as pirates and have fun. So, look at me. They say a picture is better than a thousand words. That’s a lot of words! My few pictures tell it all.

Do you know which one is the pirate ship? How do you know? Yes, it’s the brown ship with the pirate flag on it. Do you know the flag’s name? It’s called the: “Skull and Cross Bones.” This is because pirates plundered other people’s ships and harbors and killed many people. They left them to rot until only their bones were left.

Pirates spent most of their time on the high seas. They only went into port to plunder and steal; and to take on fresh supplies of food, water, and stronger drink. As Wally Whale and Olive Octopus can tell, they often saw pirate ships crossing the ocean. The pirate lookouts keenly scanned the horizon from up high in their crow’s nest to spot the sail of a passing merchant ship laden with valuable cargo. The merchant ship on my mural has a plain black flag.

The pirates would head towards the merchant ship, their sails ballooning in the wind. Usually the pirate ships were faster than the heavier laden merchant vessels. The pirates would pull up along side the merchant vessel and at a distance just beyond the reach of the merchantman’s guns. Pirate guns usually could shoot further. The pirates would then blast away at the merchantman’s decks, hurting the people on board and causing their sails to collapse. The pirate ship would then sail in closer so that the pirates could board the merchant vessel. With their swords high in the air, the pirates would attack usually not letting anyone on the ship stay alive to attack them back.

They would then inspect the ship’s cargo. Sometimes they would attach strong ropes to the damaged merchant vessel and set sail back to their secret pirate island. Here they would separate out the treasure so that each pirate got a good share. The captain and the mates, of course, got most of the goods.

This was the life of a pirate until naval vessels were built faster and with more powerful guns. They then caught most of the pirates roaming the seven seas, and today, we don’t hear much about pirates any more.
