Safari Growth Chart
Do you have the Safari Growth Chart up on your wall? “What’s a growth chart,” you ask? Well, it’s something that big people like to have to mark how tall you are at important ages in your life. Big people just want to know that you are getting taller and taller.
When you have a growth chart, big people ask you to stand against the chart. Then they like to make a mark with a date to show that you are growing taller. They can also see how much you have grown since the date of the last measurement.
Look at your Safari growth chart. What’s the animal right at the bottom? It’s Carol Crocodile. Why is she low down on the chart? Well, have you ever seen a crocodile walking on land? Usually they are swimming in a river. When they walk on land you see their short, little legs. They are very short. When you first start using the growth chart, you are young and small and your head is closer to the ground than it will ever be in the rest of your life.
As you get taller, you start becoming stronger and braver. You become more like a young Lion. That’s why you see Leonard Lion higher up the growth chart than Carol Crocodile.
Next up is Elton Elephant. Don’t look at how chubby Elton is. He’s next on the chart because you’re now getting taller and taller as you grow.
You’re starting to get quite tall and looking more like an adult human being as you grow some more. That’s why Graham Gorilla is your next benchmark for growth.
Oh! Oh! Why is Humphrey Hippo next? Well it may be to tease you a little. Just before you get your teenage growth spurt, many children start filling out a little. Many kids seem chubbier than before. This happens while your body is getting ready to really start growing. It’s taking on body cells to use in your growth spurt.
So then you see Gloria Giraffe. Clearly you can see that when you reach this level, you are getting really tall. Of course you won’t look like Gloria Giraffe; and you will never be as tall as a real live giraffe – but you will be tall and your head will be much further away from the ground than it was on the dates you measured up against Carol Crocodile.
