Zootles Valance

Here’s a new word for you: Valance. Can you say: Valance? It’s in your room décor somewhere but do you know where to find it? If you have safari décor or Zootles in your bedroom, you may have the Zootles Valance above your curtains. It’s very popular for baby nursery décor or any safari décor in a kids bedroom.

Are you looking at it carefully? If you have the Zootles Valance in your bedroom, you will notice that it has loops over the curtain rail that button down. The color of the loops matches the trim that runs along the bottom of the short valance. Along the lower part of the valance are pictures of all your favorite Zootles: like Zuri the Zebra, TuTu Toucan, Jengo Giraffe and Tommy Turtle.

There’s a story about those buttons and why they are on your valance.

One evening, after story time and after the story teller dimmed the lights and left for the night, all the safari animals came out to play as they always do. The Zootles all collected together and started playing by themselves ignoring all the other safari animals.

Well a pride of lionesses saw them and decided that it was meal time. They looked at the little Zootles and decided that they would make a good meal. The lionesses started creeping low on their tummies close to where the little Zootles were playing. They were careful to make no noise so that the Zootles didn’t hear them coming.

Suddenly one lioness stumbled over a toy that had been lying on the ground. Zuri the Zebra’s keen ears picked up, and he looked in the direction of the noise. He saw the lionesses creeping towards them. At first he was surprised. The animals in the bedroom were always friendly, it was not normal for them to try to hurt or eat any of the other safari animals. Being a Zebra, he knew the danger signs when he saw them. He snorted to set off the alarm and started running. The other Zootles followed him in panic.

Zuri knew that they would not make it if they stayed on the floor of the bedroom. He decided to head for high ground. He started jumping onto some bigger toys and trying to make his way up to the light stand and up onto the dresser. The other Zootles followed him in panic, shouting and trumpeting as they leapt and jumped higher and higher.

They could actually have stopped at the top of the dresser but they were in such panic, Zuri kept on going. That was a mistake. Zuri saw the valance above the curtain. He had seen monkeys escape from their hunters by swinging hand-over-hand through the trees. He took a run at the wall and then leapt for the closest side of the valance. He grabbed the fabric in his mouth and started swinging along the valance from loop to loop.

The other Zootles followed without thinking – all except Tommy Turtle who just pulled his legs and his head into his strong shell. This helped distract the lionesses for a while. They rolled him over a few times and sniffed at him hungrily. Soon they gave up and continued the chase to catch the other little Zootles.

The last of the Zootles to leap onto the valance was Elon Elephant. That’s when the trouble really started. She was too heavy for the valance loops. One by one they started tearing and the valance started dropping from one side of the curtain rail to the other. All of the Zootles were headed down back to the floor.

The lioness stopped. They circled in a ring just waiting for the Zootles to land on the floor in a heap. Supper was on its way.

Just then the story teller returned having heard noise in the bedroom. As soon as the light went on in the safari bedroom all the animals magically returned to their positions. Everything returned to normal except the valance with its torn loops.

Ever since then, buttons were put on the valance loops to provide more weight-carrying strength, just in case something like this ever happened again. Pictures of each of the Zootles were put on the valance fabric as a reminder of the day when an alert Zuri Zebra saved the Zootles pack from becoming a meal for the Lionesses.

The safari animals got together the next evening and had a counsel meeting. They all agreed that never again would any member of the safari bedroom try to eat another member of the family.
