Ship Clock
Tick tock! Tick tock! Look at me,
I’m a Boat Clock - up here on the wall.
Can you wave at me? I can’t wave my hands. I just move them to mark the time of day and night. Some big people think that I’m just here to tell the time but, between you and me, let me tell you a secret. Time is ageless and I have a memory better than an elephant. I remember everything that happens through time.
Look at my face. I remember the days of the Clipper ships that used the wind to speed across the oceans between different countries. I remember the time when a Clipper ship was wrecked in a huge storm, when the winds were so strong that they whipped up huge waves that crashed on the Clipper’s deck and even swept people over board. I remember some parents and sailors who desperately clung onto small children as they bobbed in the sea after the ship had sunk and kept them safe until a rescue ship found them or they got washed up on an island.
I remember the glorious days of the steam ships. Oh how grand it was once the steam ship was loaded and the dockside crew prepared to untie the ship. The ship’s band would strike up and play loudly as kids excitedly scurried around the decks and waved madly from the railings as they left their grandparents behind. I also remember how the steam ships would heave and roll in the large swells as the ships steamed their way through the sea. I remember how some kids would throw up in the washroom or have to rush up onto the deck. I remember most how the kids would wave flags and shout as the ship proudly steamed into harbor at the end of the trip – especially when they would steam past the famous Statue of Liberty in New York harbor.
I remember many tug boats that steamed out to rescue ships ravaged by ocean storms. It was so dangerous trying to get a line from the struggling ship to the tug. Once one line was secured, others had to be tied until the ship could be safely towed by the powerful tug. Many a tug sailor landed in the sea and had to be pulled out before the tug could start its long journey back to safety.
I also remember the many small craft that charge back and forth on the oceans skirting the beaches – especially at weekends. I’ve seen many children having happy times on these little boats. I’ve seen many children who are very safe on these boats because they always wear their flotation jackets. Sadly I also remember some stories about children and even parents who did not.
So you see. While time marches on I keep building up memories of so many things. Now it’s my job to watch from your wall and remember all the happy things you do and the good times you have as you pass through time. Let’s do it together and have fun. I always say that life is all about building good memories.
