Pirate Clock
“Yo! Ho! Ho!” That’s what pirates say. “Yo! Ho! Ho!”
But I’m a pirate clock. I’ve learned when pirates are around, it’s better not to say too much, or even anything at all. Pirates are always in command. Unless you are one of them, it might be better not to draw attention to yourself.
Oh! Silly me! Of course you are one of them. You have pirate décor in your bedroom.
Did I introduce myself? I quite forgot. I’m the pirate clock. It’s my job to make sure you don’t forget what time it is, especially story time. I hang up here on the wall and just point. But I’m as old as time and old folk forget sometimes. If you get my point!
In the old days of the real pirates, to tell the time on ships, someone had the job of ringing a bell. You could tell the time of day or night by the number of times the bell was rung. Pirates in those days were scoundrels. They would attack other people’s ships and cities; and steel their things. These days pirates are people who dress up to have fun. Pirates today are adventurers who like to go places and do new things. They don’t go around steeling and hurting people - but they do love adventure and danger!
My job up here is to point to the place from which your next pirate story will come. Look at my face. What do I look like? Did you say a pirate map, or a treasure hunt map? Stories are like treasures. Stories teach you new things and warn you of dangers. Can you see the treasure chest on the island? Stories are like jewels in your treasure chest.
Of course, I tell big people what the time is right now, but I also remind your story tellers to tell you the many stories about the pirate ships, pirate islands and the dangers of the sea.
Take notice of me. Learn to tell big people’s time, but always remember the importance of story time. One day you will be a big person with children of your own. You will also want to share with them the stories of the sea and your adventures as a pirate!
