Mermaid Clock
In an itty bitty house,
through a bright red door labeled “Kids Only”
is a teeny tiny bedroom.
In the center of this room sits two tiny toddler beds
with soft warm comforters covered with ornaments of yellow starfish, blue seahorses, red crabs and little mermaids.
Some with yellow, some with red, and some with blue curly locks of hair,
swimming around on soft downy sheets of blue and white.
“This is my room,” the little mermaid says, smiling the way little girl’s do when they’re telling you something special, something no one else could possibly know.
“My name is Goldie, and this is my room.”
And the room smiles back.
Decorations of green turtles float up sea foam walls
while images of striped fish jump and shimmy over her bedspread,
making her want to swim and swirl in the silky bedding.
She dives down under sweet smelling bed sheets as they lie folded in her big white basket with its strong sturdy wicker handles.
“This is my room,” a second little mermaid says, smiling the way little girl’s do when they’re telling you something special, something no one else could possibly know.
“My name is Ruby, and this is my room.”
She snuggles into the soft warmth of newly washed sets of flat and fitted sheets piled one on top of the other, as she pretends to hide in her cave at the bottom of the ocean, swishing her long mermaid tail back and forth.
Her room watches her play, and laughs.
Suddenly there is a crash and a splash as the two little mermaids bump heads and rise from their games to confront one another angrily.
“This is my room!” They say together, pouting and scowling and swimming into opposite corners.
“This is my room, and I can prove it,” says Goldie.
“Just look at my Mermaid clock that hangs on my wall. It has my picture on it, see?”
“Oops!” says the room. “I think you are mistaken, as here on the clock face I see a picture of both Ruby and Goldie. Could you possibly share the room?”
“Hmm,” they both think for a moment and then smile. “That will be fun!” Ruby exclaims and Goldie agrees, “Yes, this is our room.”
And their room smiles happily, as they swim away hand in hand.
