Tug Boat – Framed Print

Booooooop! Booooooop! That deep loud honking is coming from the tug boat on your framed wall print. Look at it with its bow sticking up proudly into the air. Tug boats may look small but they are usually more powerful than the biggest ocean liners and cargo ships.

When people build tug boats, they build a small hull and fill it with the biggest engine they can. You see tug boats are built for pushing. Big ships have difficulty in moving in small places. When a big ship comes into a harbor, it may have to turn, or get itself into a very special place.

Big ships turn slowly. Usually they have to move a long distance forward while slowly making a turn. That’s no good in a harbor where you need to turn the ship in a very short distance or you need to make certain that it can tie up in exactly the right place.

That’s where the tug boats come in. With one tug boat near the bow (the front) of the ship and one tug boat on the other side of the ship near its stern (the back), two tugs can move a ship around without it moving forwards or backwards from its position. The little tugs make a loud “boooop!” before pushing to signal to each other and to warn the captain of the big ship to get ready. Then they push hard on their big propellers. Soon you see the big ship moving sideways and turning.

Sometimes, a tug boat will just push gently with its nose to nudge a big ship closer to the dockside. The tug has to be very gentle so that the ship does not slam into the dock and break something. Tug boats have to know when to be strong – and when to be gentle.

Tug Boats can also pull. There are many stories of little tugs pulling giant barges. Many tugs pull or push long chains of barges across the ocean or down long rivers.

Then there are the rescue tug boats. If a ship has a disaster at sea and the engines stop, the ship’s captain calls for a tug boat to come and rescue them and tow them into the nearest safe harbor.

Big ocean liners could not survive without the help of tug boats.
