“Arrrh! Ahoy there, me mateys. Yes, it’s me, Captain Percy, your friendly pirate Captain trying to get your attention from up here in the framed print set on your wall décor.”

“By now you should recognize me from my large captain’s hat and my long coat. And, yes, that is treasure in the chest next to me. Since I’m not one of the pirates from long ago but only a friendly dress up pirate, you’ve probably guessed that the treasure in the chest is all fake. It’s mostly made of painted plastic.”

“People think that I’m angry in the picture or, at least, frustrated when they see me standing with my arms stiff like this. That is actually not the reason why I hold my arms in this strange fashion.”

“One week I needed to wash my pirate clothes. They were beginning to stink from all the pirate parades I had been in during the hot summer months. My young kids wanted to help because they knew I was tired and worn out. I agreed that they could place the clothes in the wash machine and do the laundry. They could also earn some pocket money doing it.”

“Well, I soon fell asleep, and my kids got to work. Unfortunately, I had not checked that they knew how to pick the right amount of laundry powder. By mistake, they put a whole packet of starch into the washing machine. As the jacket, shirts and pants, swished around in the water, the starch mixed in very well. Our dryer was broken at the time so we had to dry our clothes the way my Mom dried them when I was a kid. So my kids hung the clothes on a line outside to dry in the wind. Each garment was clipped onto the line using pegs.”

“Well, shiver me timbers! When I woke up, and went outside, all my clothes had dried hard – very hard! They were as hard as the plaster cast around a broken arm. I had to buy new shirts and pants, but could not find a pirate’s coat anywhere. Ever since then, when I go on a fun pirate adventure these days, people see me with my arms held stiffly out to the side – and let me tell you it is very frustrating for me, but there is nothing more I can do about it. Just to make myself feel better I make all my mates do the same!

If your folks ever let you use the wash machine, make sure that they first give you a good lesson in how to use it correctly and safely.”
