Elephant Wall Décor
Taraah! Taraah! Do you ever hear Elton the Elephant trumpeting from his position in the wall décor frame on your wall? You can usually hear it at night – well, not when you’re asleep of course, but Elton trumpets wherever he is whether he’s on a pillow, a sheet, a comforter or a curtain. He’s rather proud of that sound! Do you want to hear the story of why that sound was named ‘trumpeting’ when it doesn’t even sound like the trumpet in a band or an orchestra?
Well, to tell you the truth. It’s all a mistake. Yes, it’s the mistake of a little baby elephant named Ester. You see, when Ester was small, she kept getting her words mixed up. This is a mix up that has stuck forever.
Elton led the elephant troop one day into a large group of trees with lush green leaves to eat. Do you know that elephants only eat green things like vegetables? That’s why they are called ‘vegetarians.’ Elephants don’t eat meat.
For some reason, Elton was not in a good mood that day. He had woken up on the wrong side of the Safari plain, I guess. The other elephants kept interrupting him when he just wanted some peace and quiet so that he could pick leaves off the highest tree. But other elephants kept coming up to him and asking questions.
“Where do we go next?” “Are we there yet?”
Well Elton wanted to show them that he is boss. In a fit of anger, he curled his long trunk around the big tree, and with a huge heave, he wrenched the tree out of the ground. The other elephants stepped back in fear. One elephant stepped on Ester’s toe and she squealed out loud.
Elton staggered forward under the weight of the large tree. It was bigger than he was expecting, but he wanted to show the others his strength. He pushed hard to lift it high over his head. He was going to make a loud noise just as it got to its peak. Instead it slid to one side and toppled over, crashing to the ground. Elton’s nose was full of air just waiting to blow out in the loudest sound. His nose dropped to the ground as he stumbled forward and he tramped on the end of his nose just as he tried to push out the noise. For a short while his nose bubbled like a balloon in the middle until he lifted his foot. Then the wind rushed out of his nose in the biggest blast you’ve ever heard.
Everyone was shocked. The bigger elephants wobbled as the air rushed past them and pushed them like trees in a storm. There was a sudden stunned silence.
Just then Ester’s sweet small voice was heard as she cracked up laughing. “Oh look,” she said, pointing with her little nose to Elton’s large feet. He tramped his foot on his “trampet!”
Since there is no such word as ‘trampet,’ the big folk, when they retell this story, change it to “trumpet”.
So be careful if you are angry and bragging, and put your foot down in anger. You may just get a bad name that follows you for life.
