Safari Sham
Humph! I know you’re looking at me with that look! Many people just give me that look because I’m a Sham! Do you know what a Sham is?
Well, when someone puts on a show to hide something, that’s a Sham.
I know I look like a pillow, but really I am a pretty cover that hides a pillow inside. Most of the time people don’t even use my inside pillow to sleep on. They don’t want to make me dirty and then have to wash my pretty face. I’m just expected to sit there; all propped up on top of your bed and just look pretty all the time.
It’s all a sham! You see it’s not easy to always be pretty on the outside. I’m lucky. People don’t notice that sometimes I get bored. I get grumpy when people throw me on the floor because they want to sleep and don’t want to use me.
You might feel like that too sometimes. Sometimes you are in a room and all the big people are talking among themselves and just don’t notice you. Oh, they look at you now and then; and make comments about how tall you have grown or how cute you look. But they don’t play with you or do interesting things with you.
Yup! I feel that way too – quite often. But I’m determined not to let it make me sad. I have Brian Bear, Graham Gorilla, Carol Crocodile, Humphrey Hippo, Gloria Giraffe and Elton Elephant on my cover. I get them to chat to me and tell me stories. That makes me feel loved and needed and I don’t feel such a Sham all the time.
When you feel that people aren’t spending time with you, try to understand that big people need to be noticed too. They also need some time to talk with each other so that they don’t feel like a sham. When this happens, why don’t you do something like I do?
In your case you can get a book to page through. You can get some toys to play with while you sit on the floor. Do something; and let them chat. Please don’t just sit there doing nothing and just look pretty because that is such a sham!
