Mermaid Rug
The mermaid rug lay on the maple floor of Flower’s room. Its colors were now faded from years of being walked on. Flower looked around her room and her eyes grew misty. How could she ever look at another bedroom and feel like it was home. This room was the only one she’d ever known. When she found out that they were moving, Flower felt betrayed. How could they take her away from this wonderful place. It had everything she could ever want. It had a warm mermaid comforter that matched the rest of the décor in her room, beautiful ocean blue curtains with a valance embroidered with images of all her mermaid friends, even her walls were covered with all her under sea pals. She had designed the room herself. All the other kids in the neighborhood thought she had the coolest room ever, and at night if she ever felt lonely or scared she could talk to her mermaid friend Olive or Ruby, or any of the mermaids who kept her company. Best of all, she could swim off with them into her imagination and visit all the other sea creatures in their ocean kingdom. But now, she thought, that was all over. It would never be the same again. She flung herself across her bed and hung her head over the side fighting back the flood of tears that had erupted behind her closed lids.
“Why so sad?” Flower rolled over and looked around her room for the voice she was hearing. On the floor rug Olive swam to and fro surrounded by the other mermaids. They were gazing from one to the other perplexed, looking over at Flower. Flower wiped the tears away angrily with the back of her fist. “We’re moving,” she whispered. She had avoided saying anything, hoping that her Mom and Dad would come back to her and tell her it was all a big joke. But now the date was set and the moving men were going to be here in less then a week to pack their things. Olive smiled back at her unfazed by Flower’s admission. “So…?” Flower closed her eyes afraid to tell her long-time friends what that meant. The flow of tears began again, “It means we won’t ever get to play together again,” Flower confessed. Then great sobs bubbled up and spilled out of her uncontrollably. She buried her face in her hands. “Flower, we’re coming with you,” Ruby said from the corner of the rug. “No your not, you have to stay here.” Flower’s muffled response came in between great blubbering snivels. “They’re not coming to pack your stuff?” said Pumpkin from the other corner of the rug. “Yes, but I met you guys here.” Flower moaned, and the bawling started again. “Yes, but we’re a part of your imagination,” Goldie said, “We didn’t find you because of this room, we found you through your love for the ocean and our world.” “That’s right,” said Ruby, “That’s what guided you to us.” “We live inside you and your head,” Olive said. Her smile calmed the craziness going on inside Flowers stomach. “Even though the room you go to next may not be exactly the same, we will be, and you’ll be able to bring us there with you every time you close your eyes and pretend,” Olive said. Flower looked at her friends on her rug and smiled. “You’re a part of me where ever I go,” she stated. Then Olive and the other little mermaids in the picture on the rug grinned and chimed in unison, “Yes we are!”
